I wrote to STIHL Customer Service from their Web Site, and gave them my serial number. They came right back with the Date of Manufacture based on the serial number etched on the engine.

I purchased the BR600 on 5/17/07, and the engine was manufactured on 2/27/02. At least I know the unit was not standing around in a warehouse somewhere for a long time. Certainly, it takes time to move the engine to the BR600 assembly line, assemble it, then ship it to the various interim locations before it went to the dealer.

From what I could find stihl only put date codes in the serial number on certain models but you may be able to find something here.
